Varying degrees of success

Decided to make an attempt at plugging in my KVM switch again this weekend. I sort of got it working the way I wanted to. Had some problems when connecting it to my desktop machine with the VGA to DVI cable (I won’t go into details as it’ll probably bore you to death or make your brains dribble out of your ears). At least I can now plug my laptop into the KVM switch if I want and use it with my 20″ widescreen Samsung LCD monitor and my desktop keyboard and mouse. My only gripe is that the Samsung monitor doesn’t seem to support a screen resolution of 1280×800 (the native resolution on my laptop), nor does my laptop want to set the screen resolution to 1680×1050 (native resolution on the Samsung monitor). So the closest I can get is 1280×768.

I tried installing Flash player for Firefox on my laptop today, but it seems that the version on the Adobe website doesn’t support the 64-bit version of Ubuntu. Found some instructions on how to install it. And it seems to be working in Firefox 2, but not Firefox 3 beta 5. Oh well…the reason I wanted it installed is so that I’d be able to play Bejeweled ;P
And as I now went to the page it’s now working :) Yay ;)

Whilst in town today I went into WH Smith, and I did managed to stop myself from buying a bundle of books. But instead I ended up buying the latest issue of the ‘Linux Format‘ magazine.

There was an article on the Asus EEE PC in the ‘Linux Format’ magazine, and it just made me want one even more ;P
Not like I need one, nor am I sure what I’d use it for if I did get one, but it’s so cute :) And looks kinda cool :)
There was also a link to an entry (called ‘Deliver us from Microsoft‘) on Stephen Fry’s blog in the above mentioned article. The post is also available as a column on Dork Talk on The Guardians website.

I was going to have a go at installing Windows XP in VirtualBox on my laptop today. Mainly so I can test my website in Internet Exploder, but I was also thinking of making an attempt at getting Napster running on it.. But it’ll have to wait until next weekend I think. I would have to install VirtualBox as well after all. And I can see myself completely loosing track of time if I did start on it now. Which wouldn’t be great as I’m on the early shift tomorrow.

Anyway, I should probably go make myself some dinner since it’s getting a bit late.. I’ll have to have a bit more of a read of the Dork Talk articles after getting some food.
